Verna Williams was born in 1906 and moved to Los Angeles when she was a teenager. She describes The Inkwell, a segregated portion of the beach in Santa Monica, in an interview for the 1992 LA Public Library's Shades of LA oral history project. I ran out of time and didn't play the full excerpt that I had originally planned for but I highly recommend taking a listen to her oral history. I'll definitely be sharing more of it on a later show!
The Inkwell is located on Ocean Park Walk between Bay Street and Bicknell street. There's a plaque there placed by the city commemorating the place as "a place of celebration and pain."
